The Mountain at Meem Gallery
In collaboration with GALLERIA CONTINUA, San Gimignano / Beijing / Les Moulins / Habana, Meem Gallery is presenting Moataz Nasr’s debut film, The Mountain, this March. The film, which is shown across five screens, was formerly part of a multi-sensory experience in the 2017 Venice Biennale’s Egyptian pavilion.
The Mountain shares the story of Zein, a young woman who returns to her village in the mountainous region of Upper Egypt after completing her studies. Educated and critical, she challenges the deeply ingrained superstitions prevalent in her community often to the disapproval of local elders. She makes her way up the mountain with her father’s staff in hand to prove a point to the villagers cautiously following her lead. Is Zein likely to return alive or is she making the ultimate sacrifice? See this multilayered 12-minute film by the Egyptian artist until 16 May.
Moataz Nasr is a multimedia artist from Egypt whose work explores traditions and modern globalism. He’s deeply interested in the geopolitical and social development in the Middle East and Africa, as evident in The Mountain. Stay tuned to this page for more information on the screening schedule.
