‘Star Liner’ by Zak Ové

Opening on 19 March as part of Art Dubai, ‘Star Liner’ is the newest exhibition at the Lawrie Shabibi gallery. It’s the first solo show in the Middle East by the British-Trinidadian artist Zak Ove.

Ove’s works often deal with the notion of belonging, especially in a multicultural world. He’s known for his large installations, which have been on show at the British Museum and Yorkshire Sculptural Park. ‘Star Liner’ was inspired by the futuristic and psychedelic music of George Clinton, as well as the Black Star Line, a shipping line that transported goods and African Americans throughout Africa. The exhibition includes a mix of paintings, sculptures, and a new series of African masks made from brightly-painted car parts.
