Chiharu Shiota at Jameel Arts Centre

Japenese artist Chiharu Shiota’s installation Departure was specially commissioned for the launch of Jameel Arts Centre in November. The collection dives into conversations of displacement, time and the entanglements of life, using yarn to create immersive web-like structures that consume their inhabited space. Shiota draws from her childhood in Japan and her move to Berlin in 1990 (where she continues to live), which inspired poignant questions on travel, belonging and the human condition. In this Artist’s Room installation, Shiota works with abra boats as an ode to the history of Dubai Creek and the city’s multicultural network of people, ideas and goods.
